“Faith-led. Community-driven. Always there when disaster strikes.”
The journey of Southern Boys Disaster Relief began not with a plan, but with a calling.
It started when I joined TikTok to watch some videos my son had posted. Just a few days after Hurricane Helene hit Western North Carolina, I came across videos showing the devastation left behind by the storm. Concerned, I called my high school friend who lived in the area to check on him. He assured me that he and his family were safe, but he shared a tragic story that changed everything.
Some of his buddies had hiked into the mountains to check on their own families. On their way back down, they reached the river and discovered a heartbreaking scene — a mother, a father, and their three children had drowned, still embracing each other, clinging to an oak tree. That image stayed with me.
Later, as I sat on the couch, I felt a sudden rush — hot, then cold. I began shaking. Then I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned around, but no one was there. In that moment, I knew it was God speaking to me, telling me: “Go help the people in North Carolina.”
But I also knew I couldn’t do this alone. I needed my son by my side. The next morning, I asked him, “Will you go with me to North Carolina to help cook and feed the people affected by the storm?” Without hesitation, he said yes. That was on a Tuesday.
We put out a call on Facebook, and our community responded with love and generosity. In just seven days, we had a large Penske truck, an 18-foot cargo trailer, and a car trailer loaded with food, freezers, cookers, clothes, canned goods, toiletries — everything we could gather.
The following Tuesday, we headed to North Carolina and stayed at Spruce Pines Bethel Bishop Church for five days, cooking and feeding everyone we could. When we returned home, I thought I needed rest. I was worn out. But as I drove, that same feeling came over me again — a clear message: “You’re not done. Get ready and go back.”
And that was the moment Southern Boys Disaster Relief Team was truly born.
Since then, we haven’t looked back. Wherever there’s disaster, wherever there’s a need — we’ll be there, doing everything we can, for as long as we can.
